World production of plastic bags is at an ail-time high, but a substance which developed  34. in the Britain is said to be reducing their lifespan from decades to just a few months.  35. In a quiet revolution, four of the five supermarket chains in the UK have now been switched  36. to degradable bags. Put together, these stores hand out up to 10 billion plastic bags each year.  37. They are made with an additive known as D2W and become brittle when they exposed to air.  38. They then decompose into water and carbon dioxide with minimal trace elements in just two months.  39. Brits throw out almost 1 million tones of plastic waste a year, but much of which ends up in  40. landfill sites after being taken used for only a few days. A rubbish sack or carrier bag could  41. have a useful life expectancy of two years longer, while a bread bag may be expected to last  42. no longer than a few months. Two-thirds of all food is now wrapped in a plastic, and only one  43. in every 200 plastic bags is thought to be recycled. “The technology is now new, but the  44. application is,” says Allan Blacher, of Hertfordshire based Sympony Plastics in southeast  45.
